Acid/alkaline balance, electrolyte reserves and pH
The human body always works to maintain a healthy acid/alkaline balance by ridding itself of acids produced through metabolic functions. It uses electrolyte minerals held in reserve, acquired from food and supplementation, to buffer or protect the body from these acids as they are eliminated. Times of exercise, stress, poor diet and cleansing can increase the demands upon our electrolyte reserves.* pH testing can be used to gauge electrolyte reserves.
Testing your pH is easy
A simple urine or saliva test can assist you in determining if you are eliminating normal amounts of buffered acids. Generally, a low pH indicates an acid state (electrolyte mineral reserves are being depleted) whereas a higher pH indicates sufficient reserves. Visit our downloadable pH testing information page for how to test your own pH.
Our pH papers are produced specifically for testing urine and saliva
Our pH papers gauge a range of 5.5 to 8 which is just right to give you a picture of where you stand. We have found them to be much more accurate than litmus paper which is designed for other applications. We recommend that you test your pH regularly to keep tabs on your range and always test before cleansing to know if you need to boost your electrolytes prior to embarking on your Cleanse. For more information read About Cleansing.

If testing reveals that you need to boost your pH, try one of our electrolyte supplements: Alkalizer, our all natural electrolyte formula made from dehydrated juice crystals, or for those who prefer capsules or are sensitive to sugars try ElectroLife. Another way to boost pH is by drinking a tasty alkalizing vegetable broth (recipe below) that you can easily make yourself. Look in the recipes section of our site for more electrolyte mineral rich soups.
Recipe for Vegetable Broth
A vegetable broth made from organically grown vegetables can be an excellent source of essential electrolytes.
Dice 3-4 unpeeled organically grown potatoes of any variety
Dice one small organically grown onion
Thinly slice 3-4 stalks of fresh organically grown celery
Thinly slice 1 or 2 fresh organically grown carrots
Chop a large handful of organically grown greens such as kale or chard
A finely diced sweet potato or yam adds a wonderful flavor, if you like.
Place in 3 quarts of pure clean or distilled water. Simmer for 20 minutes, Strain the liquid, discard the veggies and drink.
Don’t be afraid to experiment! Adding a teaspoon of raw organic apple cider vinegar and a dash (or more) of cayenne pepper livens up the flavor. Fresh or dried organically grown herbs such as parsley, oregano, thyme, savory or any salt-free, msg-free and other additive-free herbal seasoning blend can be added for extra flavor. Truly, any organically grown vegetable of your liking can be added to the broth.
